SYMPTOMS
========

When you install any of the programs listed at the beginning of this article,
the following message is displayed on the screen:

   Please wait while Setup updates your computer...

While this message is displayed on the screen, you may receive one of the
following error messages:

Microsoft Encarta Encyclopedia 99
---------------------------------

   Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

   Runtime Error!
   Program: E:\EE\SETUP.EXE
   Abnormal Program Termination

Microsoft Encarta Reference Suite 99
------------------------------------

   Encarta Reference Suite 99 Setup Complete

   One or more errors were encountered during Setup. Setup did not complete
   sucessfully.

Microsoft Encarta Virtual Globe 99
----------------------------------

   Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

   Runtime Error!
   Program: E:\EVG\SETUP.EXE
   Abnormal Program Termination

CAUSE
=====

This behavior can occur if the System.ini file has been marked with the
Read-only attribute.

RESOLUTION
==========

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files Or Folders.

2. In the Named box, type "system.ini" (without the quotation marks) and then
   click Find Now.

3. Right-click the System.ini file located in the Windows folder, and then click
   Properties.

4. Click to clear the Read-only check box, and then click OK.

5. Close the Find: Files Named System.ini window, and then restart your
   computer.
