CRS: Fails to Execute ACL Replication

SYMPTOMS

Content Replication System (CRS) fails to execute access control list (ACL) Replication and event viewer may report the following errors:

   15129: CRS aborting /ACL replication  due to an inability to initialize
          the Microsoft Membership System.

   8194:  The description for Event ID (8194) in Source (SecRepl) could
          not be found. It contains the following insertion string(s): .

If you are using a localized version of Windows NT, you may encounter a different error.

CAUSE

There are two possible sources of the problem.

Case 1

Membership Broker System (MBS) registers an incorrect user account in the following registry key:

   HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Secrepl\DefaultAccount

The registry key contains the user account "administrator" instead of "administrators" (plural).

Case 2

The user account "administrators" doesn't exist (as in the case of the localized version of Windows NT, for example, French and German).

WORKAROUND

Case 1

Correct the user account from "administrator" to "administrators" by modifying the registry key.

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious, system-wide problems that may require you to reinstall Windows NT to correct them. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use this tool at you own risk.

1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe or Regedit.exe, depending on your

   version of Windows NT).

2. Select the following registry entry and press ENTER:

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Secrepl\DefaultAccount

3. Change the value of the entry to "administrators" and click OK.

4. Exit Registry Editor.

Case 2

Apply Microsoft Commercial Internet System 1.0 Service Pack 2 or use the non-localized version of Windows NT.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Commercial Internet System version 1.0. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
