SYMPTOMS

The Microsoft Personalization and Membership Server Direct Mailer cannot send to a user that has a forwarding-address attribute when Site Server 3.0 is set up to use the Microsoft Commercial Internet System 2.0 Mail Server. The Mail Server will log the following event log message in the Windows NT System log:

ID: 16414 Src: msgbldsvc Description: Mailing <name of direct mailing> failed since no valid email addresses were found in any of the following mail aliases Distribution List: FQDN of distribution list - The problem could also be related to DS configurations.
The user will not receive any mail and the sender receives a status mail with the same text as the event log message above, if the distribution list (DL) only contains one user. If the DL contains multiple users, then the status message will contain something similar to the following (this direct mailing contained two users; one with the attribute and one without):
Mailing "Test for Direct Mailer" completed. 1 out of 1 messages have been successfully processed (1 have been successfully sent). If the total processed does not match the total sent, please see the direct mail logs for details. Time started: 8-27-1998 13:37:3.

CAUSE

The distribution list resolution code in the Direct Mailer was not designed to resolve the forwarding-address attribute.
