Site Server 3.0 Install Changes Default Document for WWW Service

SYMPTOMS

When you install Site Server 3.0, the default document for the IIS WWW Service Master Properties changes to Default.htm and Default.asp if the default document for the IIS WWW Service Master Properties is set to something other than Default.htm and Default.asp prior to the installation of Site Server 3.0. Additionally, when the Site Server 3.0 installation program changes the IIS WWW Service Master Properties default document to Default.htm and Default.asp, it also changes the default document for any child nodes to Ddefault.htm and Default.asp. The Site Server installation program does not modify any child nodes default document settings if the IIS WWW Service Master Properties default document is set to Default.htm and Default.asp, prior to the installation of Site Server 3.0.


WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, change the IIS WWW Service Master Properties default document to Default.htm and Default.asp prior to installing Site Server 3.0 and do not select any "Child Nodes" from the Inheritance Overrides dialog box. After Site Server 3.0 is installed, change the IIS WWW Service Master Properties default document to the appropriate default document for the Web server.

To change the WWW Service Master Properties default document, do the following:

  1. Click Start, point to Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack, select Microsoft Internet Information Server, and then select Internet Service Manager to start the Microsoft Management Console with the Internet Information Server snap-in loaded.


  2. Click the plus sign (+) to the left of the Internet Information Server folder.


  3. Right-click on the server name of the Web server, and then select Properties.


  4. Click the Edit button.


  5. Click the Documents tab.


  6. Click the check box to "Enable Default Document" (if this box is not already checked).


  7. Select one of the available default documents and click Remove to remove it.


  8. Click the Add button and type in the name of any new default document, and then click OK to add a new default document.


  9. Click OK or Apply at the bottom of the Documents tab to apply changes.


  10. When you are prompted with the Inheritance Overrides dialog box, select any or all Child Nodes that the default document change should be applied to.



STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Site Server version 3.0
