Using Direct Mailer with Multi-Homed Servers

SYMPTOMS

When you use a multi-homed server (either multiple NICs or multiple IPs on one NIC) with Direct Mailer and you attempt to connect to an application server that is bound to an IP address other than the primary IP address of the computer, the following error message occurs:

Cannot connect to the registry for the Site Server List Builder Service. The registry exists on the computer on which List Builder Service is running.


CAUSE

The application server configured for the List Builder or Schedule server is used to create two shares on the server:

\\SERVER\TMLBQueue\Schedule
\\SERVER\TMLBQueue\Work
Therefore, the name must be either the computer name or the primary IP address. The List Builder or Schedule server name is also used to look in the registry to find configuration information, which causes the error message.


WORKAROUND

It is still possible to configure a multi-homed server to work with multiple Membership instances. To do this, configure the Virtual Web servers to have multiple IP-address mappings by performing the following steps:

  1. Click Start and point to Site Server Service Admin (MMC).


  2. Open Internet Information Server, locate the server, and then locate the Virtual Web site.


  3. Open the properties and find the IP Address that is mapped to TCP Port 80.


  4. Click the Advanced button.


  5. Click the Add button.


  6. Set the IP Address to the IP address of the computer. You can find this by typing the following command:
    ipconfig /


  7. Set the TCP port to an unused port, such as 2000.


  8. Stop and restart the virtual Web site.


  9. Try to access the site using the syntax http://IP Address:2000/
    You should now have access to the site.


  10. Go back to the Direct Mailer application and select Settings on the Tools menu.


  11. Click the Direct Mail tab.


  12. Enter the computer name and the TCP port for the application server for List Builder or Scheduler. For example: MYSERVER:2000


  13. Enter the username and password for a user defined in the Membership instance that is mapped to that virtual Web.


  14. Create a new direct mailing by clicking the Mail icon.


  15. Enter the second IP address (the one mapped to TCP Port 80) in the template URL.
