FIX: Recovering Messages & Redefining Queues after Applying SP4

ID: Q197534

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

When you apply the Year 2000 update from the full download version of Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4, Microsoft Message Queue Server may be uninstalled from your computer. This results in the loss of all messages on that computer in addition to the removal of the computer and its queues from the Message Queue Information Store (MQIS) database. Reinstalling Microsoft Message Queue (MSMQ) on the computer does not recover the messages or redefine the queues previously associated with the computer. Reinstalling MSMQ results in a new MSMQ Enterprise ID for the MSMQ Queue Manager on that computer. Messages created on other computers and not yet delivered may not be sent to this computer.

RESOLUTION

Recovery plans for MSMQ are inherently application specific because the node lost could be at any tier in the distributed solution involving many nodes and layered technologies. The administrator of that distributed solution must implement the disaster recovery plan for that node in order to return it to the correct state.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Y2ksetup.exe file included with the full download version of the Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4. This problem is corrected in a re-release of the full download version of Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4. For more information, please go to the following Web site:
