FTP Downloads Fail When Chaining Proxy Server to Netscape

ID: Q216510

SYMPTOMS

When a Microsoft Proxy Server computer is chained to an upstream Netscape 3.5 proxy server, FTP downloads through the Web Proxy service may fail for downstream proxy clients.

For example, when you connect to ftp://ftp.microsoft.com, clicking on the Dirmap.txt file produces an hourglass on the browser for a short period of time. No download dialog or error message appears; however, traversing the directories on the FTP site function normally. In addition, not all FTP sites produce this behavior.

CAUSE

The downstream Microsoft Proxy Server computer resets the connection to the upstream Netscape server. This is the expected behavior, because the upstream Netscape proxy server sends a Content-Length Header with a size of 0.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, connect the FTP clients directly to the Netscape proxy server or chain the downstream proxy server to an upstream Microsoft Proxy Server computer.
