SYMPTOMS

The Microsoft Proxy Server version 1.0 currently does not have the capability to "listen" for a connection on behalf of an internal server. The Proxy Server 1.0 will only remote requests from internal clients to the Internet.

For example, SMTP would be able to send mail through the Proxy Server but not listen for incoming mail. Therefore, you cannot install a Microsoft Exchange Server behind the Proxy Server, because the Internet Mail Connector (IMC) will not receive incoming mail.

WORKAROUND

Use one of the following methods:

The first option is the preferred method, because it is good practice to minimize the number of services running on the Proxy Server. Extra services on the Proxy Server provide more points of access for attack from potential intruders.
