Proxy Server: Logging Bytes Sent and Bytes Received

ID: Q186799

The information in this article applies to:

SUMMARY

When you examine Microsoft Proxy Server log information, you may see that the value for Bytes Sent is sometimes larger than the value for Bytes Received.

MORE INFORMATION

Bytes Received (BytesRecvd) is the number of bytes received from an Internet server. Bytes Sent (BytesSent) is the number of bytes sent to an Internet server.

That is, BytesSent is the size of the request, and BytesRecvd is the size of the result. Requests are usually small, although results vary in size. On the average, receives is larger than the requests.

NOTE: The Microsoft Proxy Server 2.0 Combined hotfix (see Q190997) changes the logging of the Bytes Sent and Bytes Received fields. With the hotfix, the fields now reflect the total bytes sent and received between the proxy server and the proxy client only. It will no longer include data sent or received from the remote web server. Additional query word: prodprx2
