BUG: OLAP Manager: Unable to Select Correct Data Folder and Temporary File Folder of a Remote Server

SYMPTOMS

In OLAP Manager, if you have a remote server registered and you want to change the Data folder or the Temporary file folder for that server, if you open the server's Properties window dialog box and click Browse, the Browse for Folder dialog box displays folders from the local drive rather than the remote server's drive.

Additionally, if you have the server's Properties dialog box open and you press OK, it verifies the Data folder against your local drive. If the Data folder is not on the local computer, the following message displays:

Folder does not exist, Create new folder?
If you select Yes, it creates the folder on the local drive, which enables you to select OK. After you select OK it then allows you to exit the Properties dialog box. However, if you select No, you are not able to choose OK in the server's Properties window and you must select Cancel to exit the dialog box.


WORKAROUND

Do not use the Browse button in the Properties dialog box to locate the folder. Instead, manually type the path and name of the folder you want to be the remote server's Data folder or Temporary file folder. Remember to type the full path from the perspective of the remote server.

NOTE: Omit share names and drive letter designations assigned by your local server computer. For example, if you want the Data folder to be the ..\Temp\Myfolder directory on the remote server's C drive, type the following in the Data folder box:

C:\Temp\Myfolder
However, as described previously, it may create the folder on the local computer if it does not exist there. You can manually delete that folder afterwards.

After you click OK to close the Properties dialog box, the MSSQLServerOLAPService service on the remote server must be stopped and restarted before the new folder will be used.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in SQL Server OLAP Services version 7.0.


MORE INFORMATION

Even if you have mapped the remote server's drive and select a folder on that drive, the path placed in the Properties dialog box after you close the Browse for Folder dialog box will be unusable by the remote server. In fact, a folder selected from any drive will almost always be unusable. Selecting a path in this manner may even prevent the remote server's MSSQLServerOLAPService service from starting.
