FIX: Transfer Manager Leaves Open Connection in Source DB

• Microsoft SQL Server version 7.0

SYMPTOMS

The SQL Server Transfer Manager establishes a connection to the source database to script and retrieve data. Upon completion of the transfer activity sp_who shows the connection status as open, sleeping and awaiting command.

CAUSE

The Transfer Manager does not release the source connection upon completion.

WORKAROUND

The connection is released when the controlling application is shutdown.

• If you are using the DTSWIZ.exe as a standalone utility the connection is released when DTSWIZ is shutdown.



• If you are using the SQL Enterprise Manager (SEM) then you should shutdown the SEM/MMC process.



• If you schedule the transfer as a task, the process spawned to handle the transfer is DTSRUN.exe and it automatically shuts down on task completion.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in SQL Server version 7.0. This problem has been corrected in U.S. Service Pack 1 for Microsoft SQL Server version 7.0. For information about downloading and installing the latest SQL Server Service Pack, see http://support.microsoft.com/support/sql/.
