MORE INFORMATION

Install services in the following order:

Windows NT

  1. Install Windows NT along with all necessary Windows NT services, protocols, and network adapters.

TIP: If your computer is not connected and logged on to a network, you need to install the Microsoft Loopback Adapter. Your Windows NT installation compact disc and the latest Windows NT Service Pack (if installed) is required. To install the Microsoft Loopback Adapter under Windows NT 4.0, do the following:

    1. Right-click the Network Neighborhood icon and click Properties, or double-click Network in Control Panel.

    2. On the Network Properties page, click the Adapters tab and click Add.

    3. Select MS Loopback Adapter from the list and click OK.

    4. Accept the defaults.

To install the Microsoft Loopback Adapter under Windows NT 3.x, follow these steps:

    1. In Control Panel, double-click the Network icon.

    2. Click Add Adapter.

    3. Select MS Loopback Adapter and click Continue.

    4. Accept the defaults.

  2. If you are using the IPX/SPX protocol, accept the default frame type of 802.3. For TCP/IP configurations, you should specify an IP address of 10.10.10.1 and a subnet address of 255.255.255.0. When you are prompted to restart the computer, click No.

  3. Clear the event logs, restart the computer, and log in using an Administrator account. If the computer is on a network and is a member server, verify that this account is a member of the local Administrators group.

  4. Verify that the Windows NT event logs are empty except for normal service startups.

CAUTION: ALL OTHER ERRORS OR MESSAGES CONCERNING FAILURES OR OTHER PROBLEMS SHOULD BE RESOLVED BEFORE CONTINUING.

Internet Explorer

If needed, or if you plan to use it in the future, install Internet Explorer 4.0. If you do not already have a copy, you can obtain one by going to the following Web site:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie
You can also get it from the Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4 compact disc, which you can order from the following Web site:

Conflicting Services

To avoid possible conflicts with files in use during installation, you should only have these services running while installing SQL Server:
Possible conflicting services include:

If any of these services are started, they must be stopped before installing SQL Server or setup may fail.

SQL Server 6.5

To begin installing SQL Server 6.5, run Setup.exe from the correct directory on the SQL Server 6.5 compact disc. If you are using BackOffice, start the Install Wizard. During the installation, choose the default settings, unless you have a specific reason for changing them. When you install SQL Server onto a computer running Windows NT Workstation, choose for the services to start under the Local System Account instead of assigning a user account.

Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack

Install Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack, choosing the options required. If you have a compact disc for Option Pack 4.0 or have downloaded it from the Web site, be sure you have the correct version for Windows NT Workstation or Server.

Windows NT Service Pack 5

Install Windows NT Service Pack 5, which is available from the following Web site:
