XADM: Exchange Databases Damaged After Windows NT Server Upgrade

ID: Q183200

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

When you upgrade to a later version of Microsoft Windows NT Server on your Microsoft Exchange Server computer (for example, when you upgrade from Windows NT Server 3.51 to Windows NT Server 4.0), the Exchange databases may become damaged.

CAUSE

This problem can occur when the national language support (NLS) files are updated during the Windows NT Server upgrade. This causes the sort order of the Exchange databases to change, which can cause the databases to become damaged.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use the Edbutil.exe program to defragment all the Exchange databases after you upgrade Windows NT Server. This causes a new index to be created for each database. Note that defragmenting the databases before you upgrade Windows NT Server does not prevent this problem from occurring.
