XADM: Manipulation of Distribution Lists Is Slow

ID: Q198015

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

When you try to add a user to a distribution list (DL), the population of the dialog box for selecting the DL is slow. This can be observed by going through the following steps:

  1. Get properties on a mailbox.

  2. Click on the Distribution List tab.

  3. Click the modify button.

  4. Select the container that has the Distribution Lists.

At this point, the Exchange Server Administrator program will take a few minutes to display the distribution lists in the selected container.

CAUSE

When the Exchange Server Administrator program submits the query to the Exchange Directory to get the requested objects to display, flags are set that causes the Directory Service to take a code path where the search is non-indexed. The non-indexed search is much slower, which causes the population of the dialog box to be slow.
