XCLN: PowerPoint Slide Show Files (.pps) Get .ppt Extension When Sent from Exchange Client to Exchange Client

SYMPTOMS

When you send Microsoft PowerPoint Slide Show files (.pps) from the Microsoft Exchange Client the .pps file gets a .ppt appended to the end of the file name (for example, Filename.pps.ppt) when it is opened in another Exchange Client.


CAUSE

PowerPoint has one registered content type as defined in Request for Comments (RFC) 1521. Therefore, all PowerPoint files you send through Exchange Client get a .ppt extension if they don't already have a .ppt extension.


WORKAROUND

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys and Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If you are running Windows NT, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).

  1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).


  2. Locate the following key in the registry:
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.pps
    Double-click Content Type, in the String box, type application/x-mspowerpoint, and then click OK.


  3. Locate the following key in the registry:
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type\application/x-mspowerpoint
    Double-click Extension, in the String box, type .pps, and then click OK.


  4. Quit Registry Editor.
