PPT: 7.0 Translator Requires Correct Type and Creator

When you try to open a PowerPoint for Windows 95 file with PowerPoint version 4.0 for the Macintosh, you may receive a message similar to the following: 

     <Name of the file>

     Sorry, this is not a PowerPoint presentation
This problem occurs if "Presentations" is selected in the File Open dialog box. If you select PowerPoint 7.0 files from the "List Files of Type" list, your presentation files disappear. This indicates that the presentations do not have the type and creator the PowerPoint 7.0 translator is looking for. Therefore, the translator does not function.

The PowerPoint 7.0 translator is designed to look for the following file tags: 

   Creator: PPT3
   Type:    SLD3
There are several third-party utilities available (for example, ResEdit and FileTyper) that can modify these tags so that the translator can work with these files.

PC Exchange, a control panel, can be used to associate a Macintosh application to a specific MS-DOS suffix (extension). To configure PC Exchange to associate the .PPT extension to Macintosh PowerPoint, do the following:

1. On the Apple Menu, click Control Panels.

2. Double-click the PC Exchange icon.

3. Click Add.

4. Type "PPT" (without the quotation marks) in the DOS suffix type 

   section.
5. Navigate to the location of the PowerPoint application program.

6. Single-click PowerPoint to select it.

7. Click and hold down the mouse button on TEXT in the document type 

   section. A menu will appear that lists the various document types that
   are used by PowerPoint. Select SLD3 (All caps). SLD3 is the document
   type PowerPoint uses for presentations.
8. Click OK to finalize your choices, and then close the PC Exchange 
   window. Now Windows PowerPoint files with a .PPT extension will have 
   the correct type and creator.
Note: If the Presentation file already resides on your hard drive, you will need to copy that file to an MS-DOS-formatted disk. The translator will now be able to see your PowerPoint 7.0 Files.

Note: In PowerPoint for the Macintosh, if the file is too large to copy to a floppy disk, it is possible to make an alias for the file, copy to a floppy, then copy it back to the desktop. This will allow PC Exchange to affix the tags to the alias (assuming the alias has a .PPT suffix).
