Text Sent Via Forms Command Is Truncated

SYMPTOMS

When you submit a long string of text that has been input using a form command on a Web page, the text may be truncated and may not be submitted in its entirety.

CAUSE

This problem can occur if the Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) source uses the Get method to submit the text string, which submits the data on the URL address line. Internet Explorer limits URL length to 1,024 characters; if the text string is longer than 1,024 characters, it truncates all input after 1,024 characters.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use the Post method instead of the Get method.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 3.01, and 3.02 for Windows 95. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
