MORE INFORMATION

Running NetMeeting for the First Time

The first time you run NetMeeting, it prompts you to enter information about yourself and the User Location Service (ULS) that you want to connect to, and then runs the Audio Tuning Wizard to automatically configure your sound card. To run NetMeeting for the first time, follow these steps:

1. Click the Start button, point to Programs, and then click NetMeeting.

2. Click Next.

3. In the Microsoft Internet User Location Service dialog box, enter the

appropriate information in the First Name, Last Name, E-Mail Address,
City/State, Country, and Comments boxes, and then click Next. Note that
the City/State, Country, and Comments boxes are optional.

4. If you want your name to be included in a particular ULS directory,
click Yes, and then type the name of the ULS in the "What is the name
of the User Location Server you would like to use to find people?" box.
If you do not want your name to be included in a ULS directory, click
No. If you do not want your name to be included in a ULS directory, but
you do want to use a ULS directory to find other people, type the name
of the ULS in the "What is the name of the User Location Server you
would like to use to find people?" box after you click No.

5. Click Next, follow the instructions in the Audio Tuning Wizard, and
   then click Finish.

After you run NetMeeting for the first time, you can modify the information you entered about yourself or the ULS that you want to connect to, or run the Audio Tuning Wizard again. To modify the information you entered about yourself or the ULS that you want to connect to, click Options on the Tools menu in NetMeeting, click the My Information tab, and then enter the information. To run the Audio Tuning Wizard again, click Audio Tuning Wizard on the Tools menu in NetMeeting.

Configuring NetMeeting for a Particular Connection Type

You can use NetMeeting to call people at other computers over a local area network (LAN), over the Internet, over a standard telephone line (using a modem), or over an ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) line. If you are calling over a LAN, you can use the TCP/IP or IPX/SPX protocol to establish the connection. If you are calling over the Internet, the TCP/IP protocol must be used. To configure NetMeeting for a particular connection type, you must enable the protocol that will be used to establish the connection. To do so, follow these steps:

1. On the Tools menu in NetMeeting, click Options.

2. Click the Protocol tab. If you want to establish a LAN or Internet

connection using the TCP/IP protocol, click the Network (TCP/IP) check
box to select it. If you want to establish a LAN connection using the
IPX/SPX protocol, click the Network (IPX) check box to select it. If
you want to establish a connection over a standard telephone line using
a modem, click the Modem check box to select it.

NOTE: If an exclamation point in a yellow circle appears over the
Network (TCP/IP) or Network (IPX) check box, then the TCP/IP or IPX/SPX
protocol is not installed on your computer.

If you want to establish a connection to a PictureTel LiveShare 3.x
meeting, click the "Use additional protocols for compatibility with
PictureTel LiveShare 3.X and earlier" check box to select it, and then
click one or more of the Modem For LiveShare Networks, Network (IPX)
For LiveShare Networks, or Network (NETBIOS) for LiveShare Networks
   check boxes to select them.

3. Click OK.

If you have configured NetMeeting so that you can call people using a modem, you can modify the properties for the modem by clicking Options on the Tools menu in NetMeeting, clicking the Protocols tab, clicking Modem, and then clicking Properties. The following modem properties can be modified:

Modifying Audio Settings in NetMeeting

To use the audio features of NetMeeting, you must be using a LAN or Internet connection with the TCP/IP protocol. You cannot use the audio features of NetMeeting with a modem-to-modem or IPX/SPX connection.

All audio settings are configured automatically when you run NetMeeting for the first time, or when you run the Audio Tuning Wizard after running NetMeeting for the first time. The following audio settings are configured automatically:

NOTE: The Audio Tuning Wizard is able to determine if a sound card is capable of full-duplex audio, but it does not enable full-duplex audio by default. To enable full-duplex audio if the Audio Tuning Wizard determines that your sound card supports it, click Options on the Tools menu in NetMeeting, click the Audio tab, and then click the Enable Full Duplex Audio check box to select it. To enable automatic gain in addition to full-duplex audio, click the Enable Auto-Gain Control check box to select it.

For additional information about full-duplex sound card support in NetMeeting, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
