SUMMARY

In order to open a Word 97 or Word 2000 document in an earlier version of Word (6.x or 7.x), you must use a converter.

You can download the most recent version of the Word 97-2000 Import Converter from the Microsoft Software Library, or you can install it from the Microsoft 2000 Office Converter Pack, which is included in the Office 2000 Resource Kit.

NOTE: The best way to open a Word 97 or Word 2000 for Windows document in an earlier version of Word for the Macintosh is to use the Word 97-98-2000 Import Converter.

How to Install the Word 97-2000 Import Converter from the Microsoft Software Library

The converter is available for download from the Microsoft Software Library in the following file. Click the file name below to download the file:
Wrd97cnv.exe
This file includes a Setup program that installs either Msword8.cnv or Mswrd832.cnv on your computer (depending on the version of Word for Windows you are running). The Setup program also installs a Wrd97cnv.doc Readme document.

NOTE: Msword8.cnv is the converter for Word 6.0 for Windows. Mswrd832.cnv is the converter for Word 7.0 for Windows 95.

After you have obtained the Word 97-2000 Import Converter, double-click the Wrd97cnv.exe file to extract and set up the converter. Depending on which version of Word you are currently using, the Setup program installs either the Mswrd832.cnv file (the 32-bit version for Word 7.0) or the Msword8.cnv file (the 16-bit version for Word 6.0). How to Install the Word 97-2000 Import Converter from the Microsoft Office Converter Pack

You can download the Office Converter Pack from the Office Resource Kit Web site on the World Wide Web at the following location:
http://www.microsoft.com/office/ork/2000/appndx/toolbox.htm
Locate the Converter Pack files from the above Web site. Two files are available for download: These files are the same and will download all converters; they just have different installation programs.

After you install the Microsoft Office Converter Pack (Convpack.exe or Cnvpck16.exe) to your hard disk, you can double-click the .exe file to run the Setup Wizard.

The converter pack includes supplemental text converters for all versions of Word. The Setup Wizard determines the version(s) of Word you currently have installed and lists those versions in the Setup screen.

If you have more than one version of Word installed, you should make sure the version that you need to import Word 2000 documents into is selected. For example, if you have Word 6.x, you should make sure Microsoft Word 6 is selected. You can clear the check boxes for any other options.

If you want to install only the Word 97-2000 Import Converter, you can click Change to select subcomponents. The Word 97-2000 Import Converter is not listed in the list of subcomponents but is installed by default. You should clear the check boxes for any converters that you do not want to install and click Continue.

Again Note: The Word 97-2000 Import Converter is not listed in the list of subcomponents but is installed by default when you select any, none, or all converters from the Converter Pack, as long as you have the top-level item selected (such as Microsoft Word 6).

Setup installs either Msword8.cnv or Mswrd832.cnv on your computer (depending on the version of Word for Windows you are running).

NOTE: Msword8.cnv is the converter installed for Word 6.0 for Windows. Mswrd832.cnv is the converter installed for Word 7.0 for Windows 95.

At this point, you can open Word 97 or Word 2000 documents in the earlier version of Word.
