ID: q196092

The information in this article applies to:

NOTE: These procedures only apply if you have installed Outlook with the Internet Mail Only option (IMO). To determine your installation type, on the Help menu, click About Microsoft Outlook. In About Microsoft Outlook, you should see "Internet Mail Only" if you have the Internet Mail Only option installed.

SYMPTOMS

If you install Microsoft Fax, in an attempt to do a mail merge from Microsoft Word, the mail merge will not work. The next time you attempt to fax from Microsoft Outlook IMO, you may get the following message:

Microsoft Outlook cannot start Outlook fax.
This feature is not currently installed.
Would you like to install it now?
If you click Yes, Outlook will reinstall the Symantec Fax Starter Edition.

CAUSE

Installing Microsoft Fax removes the Symantec Fax Starter Edition component used by Outlook IMO.

RESOLUTION

Reinstall the Symantec Fax Starter Edition fax service.

MORE INFORMATION

When you install Outlook in the IMO mode, it also installs the Symantec Fax Starter Edition (SFSE) fax service. Some faxing capabilities are not available with the SFSE. For example, it does not provide for a mail merge to fax, using Microsoft Word. If you install Microsoft Fax in an attempt to gain this capability within Word, it will not work. Furthermore, installing Microsoft Fax removes the SFSE component used by Outlook IMO.

The next time you attempt to fax from within Outlook, the following message will be displayed:

Microsoft Outlook cannot start Outlook fax. This feature is not currently installed. Would you like to install it now?
To reinstall the Symantec Fax Starter Edition fax service, answer Yes to this question. After the Install Wizard finishes, restart Outlook and reconfigure your fax service.
