Booting Macintosh Centris and Performa Computers

SUMMARY

The Macintosh Centris that includes a CD-ROM drive does not ship with a Macintosh system software disk (a startup disk). Instead, this model ships with a CD-ROM that contains the Macintosh system software. Macintosh Performa computers also ship without a startup disk. They ship with a disk called "Utilities" that contains bootable system software. This article provides information on how to boot both these machines.

Booting a Centris

To boot a Macintosh Centris from its System CD-ROM, follow these steps:

1. Restart the machine.

2. When the screen first blinks, press the COMMAND+OPTION+SHIFT+DELETE

   key combination. (Keep holding these keys down until step 4 below. Only
   the DEL key above the RETURN key will work for this procedure.)

3. When the screen displays a picture of a disk with a question mark,

   insert the CD-ROM that contains the system software.

4. When the machine is finished booting from the CD-ROM, release the

   COMMAND+OPTION+SHIFT+DELETE keys.

NOTE: If the machine does not detect the presence of a floppy disk drive, it automatically boots from the CD-ROM drive.

You can make your own startup disk by running the Installer and choosing the Minimum Install option for a floppy disk.

Booting a Performa

The Utilities disk that ships with Macintosh Performa computers contains a copy of the system software. You can use this disk to boot the machine. The System version on the Utilities disk is the same version that is installed on the Performa (either 7.0.1p or 7.1p).

The Performas can also be booted from CD-ROM using the Cmd+Opt+Shift+Del key sequence.

The Performas come with a Backup/Restore utility that you can use to back up either the hard disk or the System Folder.
