PRJ98: Duration Changes If Task Split Is Moved

ID: q176308

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project 98, if you move a split portion of a task, the duration of that task may change.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs if the task has an assigned resource that uses a calendar other than the project calendar (for example, the Night Shift calendar).

For example, let's say you are using the Standard calendar (8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M.) as the project calendar. You assign a resource that uses the Night Shift calendar (11:00 P.M. to 8:00 A.M.) to a task and then split the task. When you move the split portion of the task, Microsoft Project attempts to schedule the split using the Standard calendar. Because the resource is based on the Night Shift calendar, the split portion is adjusted to coincide with the working time of the resource. If this carries over to the day after the task should have been finished, that portion of the task will be lost.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, turn off the Round bars to whole days option by following these steps:

  1. On the Format menu, click Layout.

  2. Click to clear the Round bars to whole days check box.

  3. Click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft Project listed above.

This problem was corrected in Microsoft Project 98 for Windows, Service Release 1 (SR-1).
