PRJ98: Project Stops Responding When Formatting a Bar

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project 98, if you right-click a custom formatted Gantt bar, and then click Format Bar on the shortcut menu, you may receive one of the following error messages.

In Windows 95

This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.

If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.
When you click Details, you receive the following message:
WINPROJ caused an invalid page fault in module WINPROJ.EXE at 0137:3006c3ae.

In Windows NT

An application error has occurred and an application error log is being generated.

WINPROJ.EXE
Exception: access violation (0xc0000005), Address: 0x3006c3ae.


CAUSE

This problem occurs when the task bar you right-click is not in the active window. Microsoft Project incorrectly applies text styles from the active window to the formatted task that you are selecting.


WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, before you right-click the Gantt Bar, use the left mouse button to click the bar and make it active. You can then right-click the bar and click Format Bar on the shortcut menu.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft Project listed above.

This problem was corrected in Microsoft Project 98 for Windows, Service Release 1 (SR-1).
