PRJ98: Project Stops Responding When Closing a Consolidated File

The information in this article applies to:


SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project 98, when you close a consolidated file, you may receive one of the following error messages.

In Windows 95

This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.

If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.
When you click Details, you receive the following message:
WINPROJ caused an invalid page fault in module WINPROJ.EXE at 0137:3006c3ae.

In Windows NT

An application error has occurred and an application error log is being generated.

WINPROJ.EXE
Exception: access violation (0xc0000005), Address: 0x3006c3ae.


CAUSE

This error message occurs when all of the following conditions are true:


WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, remove the resource sharing links and re- create them to point to the new location. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. On the File menu, click Open.


  2. Select the resource pool, click Open. When prompted, click open resource pool read-write and then click OK.


  3. On the File menu, click Open.


  4. Select one of the projects that shares the resource pool, and click Open. When prompted, click Do not open other files.


  5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for each of the projects that share the pool.


  6. Switch to the resource pool. On the Tools menu, point to Resources, and then click Share Resources.


  7. Select all of the files listed under Sharing Links. Then, click Break Links.


  8. Close and save all files.


  9. Open the consolidated file.


  10. If any inserted projects are invalid or missing in the consolidated file, delete the invalid references if necessary, and reinsert them.


  11. Close and save the consolidated file.


  12. Open the resource pool and each of the files that share resources from it.


  13. In the first file that shares resources from the resource pool, point to Resources on the Tools menu, and then click Share Resources.


  14. In the Share Resources dialog box, click Use Resources.


  15. In the From list, click to select the resource pool, and then click OK.


  16. Repeat steps 13-15 for each of the files that uses resources from the resource pool.


  17. Close and save all projects.



STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft Project listed above.

This problem was corrected in Microsoft Project 98 for Windows, Service Release 1 (SR-1).
