PRJ98: Error Message When Pasting Summary Task or Recurring Task

The information in this article applies to:


SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project 98, when you copy and then paste a summary task or recurring task, you may receive either of the following errors:

The format that is on the Clipboard cannot be pasted.

The format is not compatible with Microsoft Project formats.

Format the data another way, and then try again.
-or-
A pasting error occurred on ID X in the Start Column.

This is not a valid date, or is outside the range of dates, which is January 1, 1984 through December 31, 2049.

Type a date in the correct format: for example, 6/15/98 or June 15, 1998.

To continue pasting with additional error messages, click Yes. To continue pasting with no error messages, click No. To stop the paste operation, click Cancel.
Followed by:
A pasting error occurred on ID <n> in the Predecessors Column.

The predecessor information is not valid. Try one of the following:

Type only positive, whole numbers.

Type predecessor information in the following order: Predecessor ID number, dependency, and lead or lag time.

If the predecessor information is too long, use the Task Information dialog.

To continue pasting with additional error messages, click Yes. To continue pasting with no error messages, click No. To Stop the paste operation, click Cancel.
NOTE: This message will be repeated.

Followed by:
You moved task <n> of '<Project Name>' to start <date>. This is before the project start date (<date>).
You can:
Continue. Move the task to start before the project start date.
Cancel. Do not move the task.


NOTE: <n> is the number of the summary task that you copied and pasted.


CAUSE

This behavior occurs when you do the following:

  1. You first copy a summary task or recurring task.


  2. You then delete the summary task or the recurring task you just copied.


  3. You then paste the summary task or recurring task.



WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, complete both the copy and paste operations before deleting the summary task. Alternately, cut the summary task and paste it at the new location.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft Project listed above.

This problem was corrected in Microsoft Project 98 for Windows, Service Release 1 (SR-1).
