SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project 98, when you print or print preview a Gantt Chart view, you may receive one of the following error messages.

In Windows 95

This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.

If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.
When you click Details, you receive the following message:
WINPROJ caused an invalid page fault in module WINPROJ.EXE at <address>.

In Windows NT

An application error has occurred and an application error log is being generated.

WINPROJ.EXE
Exception: access violation <number>, Address: <address>.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when you print or print preview a Gantt Chart view that displays more than 12,000 tasks with at least one task dependency.

RESOLUTION

To correct this problem, install Microsoft Project 98 for Windows Service Release 1 (SR-1).

NOTE: A temporary workaround to this behavior is to not show link lines in the project that contains more than 12,000 tasks. To turn link lines off, follow these steps:

  1. On the Format menu, click Layout.

  2. In the Layout dialog box, under Links, click the option on the far left that does not display link lines. Click OK.
