ACC1: Recovering MDB File Larger Than the 128-Megabyte Limit

ID: Q96550

The information in this article applies to:

SUMMARY

A Microsoft Access version 1.0 database (.MDB file) is limited to a maximum size of 128 megabytes (MB). However, you can exceed this limit by importing large amounts of data or by creating objects that cause the limit to be exceeded.

MORE INFORMATION

In the event a Microsoft Access database exceeds the limit, here are two options you can use to attempt to remedy the situation:

  1. If you are able to open the database, export some of the objects to another database, and then delete them from the current database.

  2. If you are unable to open the database, try to compact the database by using the Compact utility. It will work on files larger than 128 MB, unlike the Repair utility.

Unfortunately, there are situations where neither one of these options will work. If this is the case, you will be unable to recover the data using Microsoft Access.
