DVD Content Streaming Not Supported on NetShow Theater Server

ID: Q200970

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to stream unsupported DVD, .vob content files from NetShow Theater Server 3.0 may produce a multitude of symptoms. The following is a dynamic list of errors that may occur:

CAUSE

NetShow Theater Server attempts to load DVD content files because the DVD format is a superset of an MPEG-2 program stream. When an attempt to load DVD video content files onto a NetShow Theater Server is made, the file is parsed at a level where the video headers appear to be the same as an MPEG-2 program stream file. However, when an attempt is made to render the stream at the client player, a failure occurs due to the true differences between an MPEG-2 program stream file and a DVD file.

MORE INFORMATION

There may be numerous licensing issues with the use of video content. Before using any content on NetShow Theater Server, please contact the registered owner for information on licensing issues.

When you attempt to verify the operation of a NetShow Theater Server installation, use of the sample MPEG content provided by Microsoft is highly recommended. MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 content files, which have been encoded at various bit rates, are available on the Microsoft NetShow Theater Server Video Samples compact disc that is included with the purchase of NetShow Theater Server 3.0. Most of the MPEG-1 samples can also be obtained from the NetShow Theater Sever Web site at http://www.microsoft.com/theater/.

Please note that decoding an MPEG-2 stream from NetShow Theater Server with the Microsoft Windows Media Player, which is included with NetShow Theater Server 3.0, requires the use of an MPEG-2 hardware decode adapter. For additional information, see the online NetShow Theater Server documentation file NetShowTS.chm, which is located in the NetShow Theater\Docs\HTML directory of your NetShow Theater Server media. For a dynamic listing of third-party MPEG-2 decode adapters, see the NetShow Theater Server Web site at http://www.microsoft.com/theater/.

If the information in this article does not resolve your issue, please complete a NetShow Theater problem report form before you open a Service Request with Microsoft Product Support Services.
