ACC2000: Sort Options Dimmed for Memo Columns in Datasheets and Forms

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Access 2000, you can sort on Memo fields in a query. However, if you select a Memo field in a datasheet or on a form, you will not be able to sort by this field.


RESOLUTION

Create a query that includes the Memo column, and then apply the sort that you want.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

Steps to Reproduce Behavior

  1. Open the sample database Northwind.


  2. Open the Categories table in Design view.

    Note that the data type for the Description field is Memo.


  3. On the View menu, click Datasheet view.


  4. Click the Description column and then right-click the column to display the shortcut menu.


Note that the menu choices for Sort Ascending and Sort Descending are unavailable (dimmed).
