SYMPTOMS

When you perform an administrative installation (setup /a) of Microsoft Small Business Financial Manager 98 for Microsoft Excel 97 (SBFM), you receive the following error message:

Setup does not support being run in this mode.

This error message is followed by the following error message:

Microsoft Small Business Financial Manager Setup was not completed
   successfully.

CAUSE

By design, you cannot run Microsoft Small Business Financial Manager from a network server. Therefore you cannot perform an administrative installation by using the setup /a command.

RESOLUTION

Although the Setup program does not include a special network installation mode, you can distribute Microsoft Small Business Financial Manager over a network provided that you have obtained the appropriate licenses to do so. To do distribute it over a network server, follow these steps:

1. On the network server, create a folder called SBFM.

2. Copy the contents of the SBFM folder on Disc 1 of Microsoft Office

97 Small Business Edition for Windows to the SBFM folder on the network
   server.

3. Connect to the network share from the workstation on which you want to
install Microsoft Small Business Financial Manager.

NOTE: Each workstation must have a local installation of Microsoft Excel
version 97 for Windows, Service Release 1 (SR-1).

For additional information about SR-1, please see the following article
   in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

4. Start the Setup program from the workstation by double-clicking the
Setup.exe file that is in the SBFM folder.

STATUS

This behavior is by design of Microsoft Small Business Financial Manager 98 for Microsoft Excel 97.
