XL: Error Creating Worksheet Using New Office Document Dialog

The information in this article applies to:

• Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows
• Microsoft Excel for Windows 95, version 7.0

SYMPTOMS

When you Click New Office Document on the Start menu or on the Office Shortcut Bar to create a new Microsoft Excel workbook, you may receive one of the following error messages:

   The program associated with the selected template cannot be started, or
   the program cannot use the selected template.

    -or-

   The application associated with the selected template could not be
   started, or the application could not use the selected template.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if the Ignore Other Applications setting in Microsoft Excel is selected.

RESOLUTION

To resolve the problem, follow these steps:

1. Start Microsoft Excel.

2. On the Tools menu, click Options.

3. Click to clear Ignore Other Applications.

4. Click OK.
