XL: Items Stored in the Toolbar File

SYMPTOMS

If the Microsoft Excel toolbar file becomes damaged, or is deleted or moved from its original location, Microsoft Excel may exhibit the following behavior:

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the following items are stored in the Microsoft Excel toolbar file:

If this file is missing or damaged, Microsoft Excel uses the default information for these items; default toolbars and toolbar buttons, default custom AutoFill lists, and default TipWizard history information.

When you close Microsoft Excel, if the toolbar file is not located in its installed location, the file is created with the default information, and any new toolbar customization, custom list, and TipWizard history information.

Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows

In Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows, the toolbar file is stored in your Windows folder and is named:

Microsoft Excel for Windows 95, version 7.0

In Microsoft Excel for Windows 95 version 7.0, the toolbar file is named <username>.xlb and is stored in the Windows folder. For example, if your <username> is suejones, then the toolbar file will be named Suejones.xlb.

NOTE: If you click cancel in the Windows login dialog box, to cancel your connection to your network, Microsoft Excel version 7.0 will not use the <username>.xlb file; instead it will use the Excel5.xlb file in the Windows folder. If Microsoft Excel version 7.0 cannot locate a file called Excel5.xlb, it will create one in the Windows folder.

Microsoft Excel for Windows, version 5.0

In Microsoft Excel version 5.0, the toolbar file is named Excel5.xlb, and is stored in the Windows folder.

Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, version 5.0

In Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, version 5.0, the toolbar file is named Excel Toolbars (5), and is stored in the Preferences folder.
