XL: Page Fault or Type 2 Error Using Highlight Changes in Chart

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows, you may receive the following error message when you click OK in the Highlight Changes dialog box:

   This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.
   If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.

If you click Details, you receive the following error message:

   EXCEL caused an invalid page fault in module EXCEL.EXE at
   0137:302de3b2.

In Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition, you receive the following error message:

   The application "Microsoft Excel" has unexpectedly quit, because
   an error of type 2 occurred.

   You should save your work in other open applications and restart
   the computer.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:

When a chart sheet is active, you point to Track Changes on the Tools menu and click Highlight Changes.

In the Highlight Changes dialog box, you click to select the "Track changes while editing" check box.

You click to select the Where check box, click a worksheet tab, hold down the SHIFT key, and then click another worksheet tab.

You select a range of cells so that the Where reference box contains a reference that is similar to the following:
```
      'Sheet2:Sheet3'!$B$5:$D$10
```

```
You click OK.

When you click OK, the problem occurs.

NOTE: This problem does not occur if a worksheet is active when you point to Track Changes on the Tools menu and click Highlight Changes. Instead, you receive the following error message:

   Reference is not valid.

The problem also does not occur if you select a single worksheet instead of two or more worksheets in the Highlight Changes dialog box.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, do not click Highlight Changes on the Tools menu when a chart sheet is active.

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

You can use the Highlight Changes dialog box to highlight changes made to cells in a shared workbook. These changes include moved or pasted contents and inserted or removed columns or rows. When you use the Highlight Changes dialog box, a blue outline and a marker appear around any cell with the contents that have been changed.

The problem described in the "Symptoms" section in this article occurs only if you select two or more worksheets in which to highlight changes, and the active sheet is a chart sheet.
