SBFM: MS Visual C++ Run-Time Errors Importing Quickbooks Data

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

When you try to import data from Intuit Quickbooks for Windows versions 3.1 and 4.0, or from Intuit Quickbooks Pro for Windows version 4.0, you may receive the following error messages.

Error Message 1

   MS Visual C++ RunTime Library:
   Run Time Error:
   Program 'c:\program files\microsoft office\office\excel.exe.'
   Abnormal program termination.

Then, the following message appears:

   Excel caused an Invalid Page Fault in module DAO350.DLL
   @ 014F:06453410.

-or-

Error Message 2

   Microsoft Visual C++ Run Time Library
   Runtime Error!
   Program 'c:\program files\microsoft office\office\excel.exe'
   Abnormal program termination.

The following message appears

   Excel caused an invalid page fault in module Kernel32.dll
   @ 0317:bff79888

and then the following message appears:

     Excel caused an invalid page fault in module Dao350.dll
     @ 0137:06243410

CAUSE

Error Message 1

The first error message appears if the length of a company name is more than 32 characters.

Error Message 2

The second error message appears if a quotation mark ("), an apostrophe ('), an open bracket ([), or a close bracket (]) is used in any of the list element items: Chart Of Accounts, Items, or Class List. This problem may also occur if any of the list element items is more than 32 characters in length.

WORKAROUND

Error Message 1

To work around this problem, follow these steps:

1. Open the file in the version of Intuit Quickbooks in which the file was

   created.

2. On the File menu, click Company Info.

3. Shorten the company name to 32 or fewer characters.

   Note that a space counts as a character.

4. Click OK.

5. On the File menu, click Close Company.

6. On the File menu, click Exit.

7. Run the Import Wizard in the Microsoft Small Business Financial

   Manager for Microsoft Excel 97.

Error Message 2

To work around this problem, follow these steps:

 1. Open the file in the version of Intuit Quickbooks in which the file was
    created.

 2. On the Lists menu, click Chart Of Accounts.

 3. In the Name and Type columns, check for:

     - A quotation mark ("), apostrophe ('), open square bracket ([), or
       close square bracket (]) character in the description for the Chart
       Of Accounts name or type.

     - A description for the Chart Of Accounts name or type that exceeds 32
       characters in length.

 4. To change any of the items, click Edit, modify the name or type, and
    then click OK.

 5. On the Lists menu, click Items.

 6. In the Name, Description, Type, and Account columns, check for:

     - A quotation mark ("), apostrophe ('), open square bracket ([), or
       close square bracket (]) character in the description of the item
       name, description, type, or account.

     - A description for the item name, description, type, or account that
       exceeds 32 characters in length.

 7. To change any of the items, click Edit, modify the item name,
    description, type, or account, and then click OK.

 8. On the Lists menu, click Classes.

 9. In the Name column, check for the following:

     - A quotation mark ("), apostrophe ('), open square bracket ([), or
       close square bracket (]) character in the description of the Classes
       name.

     - A description for the Classes name that exceeds 32 characters in
       length.

10. To change any of the items, click Edit, modify the Class name,
    and then click OK.

11. On the File menu, click Close Company.

12. On the File menu, click Exit.

13. Run the Import Wizard in the Microsoft Small Business Financial

    Manager for Microsoft Excel 97.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
