XL97: Euro Currency Character Is Not Displayed Correctly

SYMPTOMS

The euro currency character is not displayed as expected on your worksheet. It appears as a vertical bar or a pipe character instead of the euro character.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when you do any of the following:

You switch to Page Break Preview or zoom the worksheet to less than 80%. This percentage may vary depending on the type and size of the font that you are using on the worksheet.

You format the worksheet cell with a font size less than 8 points.

RESOLUTION

When you adjust the zoom ratio of the worksheet to less than 80% (depending on the type and size of font that you are using) or resize the font to less than 8 points, Microsoft Excel switches to using Small Fonts, Smalle.fon, or Smallf.fon, depending on the video driver in use in Microsoft Windows. Currently the Euro font is not supported for font sizes smaller than 8 points. However, you can add a registry entry that will cause Microsoft Excel not to switch to using Small Fonts when zooming the worksheet.

To use the Registry Editor to disable the Small Font substitution, follow these steps.

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys And Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If you are running Windows NT, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).

1. Close any programs that are running.

2. On the Start menu, click Run. Type "regedit" (without the quotation

   marks) in the Open box, and then click OK.

3. In the Registry Editor, expand the following key:

      HKey_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\8.0\Excel\Microsoft Excel

4. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value. With "New

   Value #1" selected, type "FontSub" (without the quotation marks), and
   then press ENTER.

5. On the Edit menu, click Modify. In the Edit DWORD Value dialog box,

   click Decimal under Base. Type the number 0 (zero) for Value. Click OK
   and quit the Registry Editor.

6. Start Microsoft Excel 97. Note that when you zoom your worksheet to 60%,

   Excel will not substitute a Small Font and the euro character will
   appear as expected.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows.
