SUMMARY

If you work in a multiple authoring environment, you can create your own custom templates and share them with other authors that are working on the same Web.

Anyone who opens the Web can create new pages based on your shared templates, which are listed along with the default templates in the New dialog box.

MORE INFORMATION

These templates can be used for a standard format that you use for pages that you create in FrontPage

Create a New Shared Template

To create a new shared template, follow these steps:
  1. In Page view, open the page you want to save as a shared template, and then click Save As on the File menu.

  2. In the Save As Type list, click FrontPage Template (*.tem).

  3. In the File Name box, type a file name for the template, and then click Save.

  4. In the Save As Template dialog box, type a title for the template in the Title box. The title will be displayed in the list of templates on the tabs of the New dialog box.

  5. In the Description box, type a brief description of the template. This is the text that is displayed in the Description area of the tabs in the New dialog box.

  6. Click to select the Save Template in Current Web check box.

Modify a Shared Template

To modify an existing shared template, follow these steps:

NOTE: Any user who can open the web can modify existing shared templates.
  1. On the File menu in Page view, point to New, and then click Page.

  2. Click the tab (General, Frames Pages, or Style Sheets) that contains the shared template you want to modify, and then in the list of templates, double-click the shared template.

  3. FrontPage opens a new page based on the shared template.

  4. Modify the new page to reflect the changes you want to make to the shared template.

  5. On the File menu, click Save As, and then in the Save As Type box, click FrontPage Template (*.tem).

  6. In the File Name box, type the file name of the shared template, and then click Save.

  7. In the Save As Template dialog box, type a title for the template in the Title box. You can type the same title that you originally used, or type a different one.

  8. In the Description box, type a brief description of the template. You can type the same description that you originally used, or type a different one.

  9. Click to select the Save Template in Current Web check box, and then click OK.

  10. When FrontPage prompts you to replace the existing template, click Yes.

Delete a Shared Template

To delete an existing shared template, follow these steps:

NOTE: Any user who can open the web can modify existing shared templates.
  1. On the Tools menu, click Web Settings, and then click the Advanced tab.

  2. Click to select the Show Documents in Hidden Directories check box, and then click OK.

  3. When FrontPage prompts you to refresh your web, click Yes.

  4. The _sharedtemplates folder is displayed in the Folder List.

  5. In the Folder List, double-click the _sharedtemplates folder to open it.

Depending on the types of shared templates you have created, the _sharedtemplates folder contains subfolders corresponding to the names of the tabs in the New dialog box.

  6. Double-click to open the subfolder (Pages, Frames, or CSS) that contains the shared template you want to delete.

  7. Right-click the folder corresponding to the name of the shared template you want to delete, and then click Delete.

  8. When FrontPage prompts you to delete the shared template, click Yes.

  9. Note: This procedure only deletes the shared template from the list of available templates for a web.

It does not delete the copies of the shared template created on the local computers of authors who have previously opened that web; the template will still be displayed in the list of templates in the New dialog box when those authors create new pages.

To remove the local shared templates, each author must delete the appropriate shared template folder from the Application Data\Microsoft\FrontPage\Pages folder on his or her computer. The exact location of this folder depends on each author's operating system and installation directory.
