FP98: Cannot Add Files to Navigational Structure

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to add a file to the navigational structure in your Web, the pointer changes and you cannot drop the file in the Navigation pane in Navigation view.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when any of the following are true:

• The Navigation view is empty (for example, when you have deleted all files from Navigation view). The default document in your Web (the Home Page) must be the first file in the navigational structure.
  
  -or-



• The file already exists in the navigational structure. You can only have one instance of each file in the navigational structure.
  
  -or-



• The server hosting your Web has FrontPage 97 or earlier Server Extensions. You can only modify the navigational structure of your Web if FrontPage 98 or later Server Extensions are installed.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: If Navigation View is Empty

1. Determine what document is the default document in your Web. The default document name will very depending on how your server is configured. Following is a list of servers and how to determine the default document on each server:
   
   
   • Microsoft Personal Web Server for Windows 95. a. On the Windows Start menu, point to Settings, and click Control Panel. b. Double-click the Personal Web Server icon. c. Note the default document in the Default Home Page section.
   
   
   
   • Internet Information Server version 2.0 or 3.0. a. On the Windows Start menu, point to Programs, point to Internet Information Server (Common) and click Internet Services Manager. b. On the View Menu, click Services View. c. Right-click the WWW service for your computer and click Service Properties on the menu that appears. d. Click the Directories tab and note the default document in the Default Document section.
   
   
   
   • Microsoft Peer Web Services. a. On the Windows Start menu, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Peer Web Services (Common) and click Internet Services Manager. b. On the View Menu, click Services View. c. Right-click the WWW service for your computer and click Service Properties on the menu that appears. d. Click the Directories tab and note the default document in the Default Document section.
   
   
   
   • Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack and Microsoft Personal Web Server version 4.0. a. On the Windows Start menu, point to Programs, point to Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack and click Internet Service Manager. b. Right-click your Web site and click Properties on the menu that appears. c. Click the Documents tab and note the default document in the Enable Default Document section.
   
   
   
   • Microsoft FrontPage Personal Web Server. a. On the Windows Start menu, point to Programs, point to Accessories, and click Notepad. b. On the File menu, click Open. c. Open Srm.cnf. By default, this file is located in the C:\FrontPage Webs\Server\Conf folder. d. Locate the DirectoryIndex line and note the default document. If there is a pound sign "#" in front of this line then the default document is Index.htm. NOTE: The default document for a disk-based Web is Index.htm.
   
   
   
   If the server you are using is not listed here, consult your Web server documentation for information about how to determine the default document.



2. In FrontPage Explorer, click Folders on the View menu.



3. Make sure there is a default document in your Web. If you have a default document, go to step 4. If you do not have a default document, follow these steps: a. Click your home page or the page you want to use for the default document. b. On the Edit menu, click Rename. c. Name the file using the default document name you determined from step 1.



4. On the File menu, click Close.



5. On the File menu, click 1 <your Web> where <your Web> is the name of the Web you just had open.



6. On the View menu, click Navigation.



7. Your home page will appear in the Navigation pane. Add your files to the navigational structure by dragging them to the Navigation pane.

Method 2: If the File Already Exists in the Navigational Structure

1. On the View menu, click Navigation.



2. Find the file in the Navigation pane and drag it to its new location in the navigational structure.

Method 3: If You Have FrontPage 97 or Earlier Server Extensions
