FP98: Cannot Add Files to Navigational Structure

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to add a file to the navigational structure in your Web, the pointer changes and you cannot drop the file in the Navigation pane in Navigation view.


CAUSE

This behavior occurs when any of the following are true:


RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: If Navigation View is Empty

  1. Determine what document is the default document in your Web. The default document name will very depending on how your server is configured. Following is a list of servers and how to determine the default document on each server:

    If the server you are using is not listed here, consult your Web server documentation for information about how to determine the default document.


  2. In FrontPage Explorer, click Folders on the View menu.


  3. Make sure there is a default document in your Web. If you have a default document, go to step 4. If you do not have a default document, follow these steps: a. Click your home page or the page you want to use for the default document. b. On the Edit menu, click Rename. c. Name the file using the default document name you determined from step 1.


  4. On the File menu, click Close.


  5. On the File menu, click 1 <your Web> where <your Web> is the name of the Web you just had open.


  6. On the View menu, click Navigation.


  7. Your home page will appear in the Navigation pane. Add your files to the navigational structure by dragging them to the Navigation pane.


Method 2: If the File Already Exists in the Navigational Structure

You can only have one instance of each file in the navigational structure.
  1. On the View menu, click Navigation.


  2. Find the file in the Navigation pane and drag it to its new location in the navigational structure.


Method 3: If You Have FrontPage 97 or Earlier Server Extensions

Install the latest version of the FrontPage Server Extensions on the server.
