FP98: Recalculating Hyperlinks Does Not Fix NTFS Permissions

ID: Q189378

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

If you remove the IUSR_XXX (where XXX is the server name) Internet Guest account from the _private folder in a FrontPage Web, any Save Results active elements will fail if they are tying to save into the _private folder, and you may receive the following error message:

FrontPage Error.

User: Please report details to this site's webmaster.

Webmaster: please see the server's application event log for more details.
Recalculating hyperlinks on the Web does not correct this problem.

CAUSE

Although you can use the Recalculate Hyperlinks command to correct any incorrect settings for the IUSR_XXX account on a Windows NT server, it will not add the IUSR_XXX account to the access control list for a particular folder if the IUSR_XXX account has been removed.

RESOLUTION

NOTE: The following procedure can be performed on the Windows NT server hosting the site only. If you are a remote author, contact your Web Publishing Provider to perform these steps.

  1. On the Windows Start menu, point to Programs, and then click Windows NT Explorer.

  2. Find the folder for your Web. Right-click the _private folder and then click Properties on the menu that appears.

  3. In the Properties dialog box, click the Security tab.

  4. Click Permissions.

  5. In the directory Permissions dialog box, click Add.

  6. In the Add Users And Groups dialog box, click Show Users.

  7. Select the IUSR_XXX account and click Add.

NOTE: You only need to set Read permissions on the _private folder for the IUSR_XXX account. After setting these permissions, you can set the appropriate permissions on all files in the _private folder by using the Recalculate Hyperlinks command.

  8. Click OK to close each open dialog box.

  9. Switch to FrontPage Explorer and click Recalculate Hyperlinks on the Tools menu.
