XL97: Moving Text Box on Chart Causes Chart to Grow

SYMPTOMS

When you move a text box that is located in a Microsoft Excel chart, you may experience one or more of the following problems:


CAUSE

These problems can occur if the following conditions are true:

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the products listed at the beginning of this article.


WORKAROUND

To work around the problem, set the zoom level of the worksheet that contains the chart to 100%.

Example of the Problem

The following steps illustrate how to reproduce the problem:

  1. Start Excel 97.


  2. Type the following values into a new workbook:
    A1: 1 A2: 2


  3. Select cells A1:A2, and then click Chart on the Insert menu. Click Finish in the Chart Wizard dialog box.

    A column chart is created on Sheet1.


  4. If the Drawing toolbar is not already visible, click the Drawing button on the Standard toolbar.


  5. Draw a text box on the chart.


  6. Type some text in the text box.


  7. Click a cell on the worksheet to activate the worksheet.


  8. Click Zoom on the View menu. Click 75%, and then click OK.


  9. Click the chart, and then click Copy on the Edit menu.


  10. Start Word 97.


  11. Click Paste Special on the Edit menu. Click Paste Link, and then click OK.


  12. Activate Excel.


  13. Move the text box around on the chart.


The chart may zoom or resize itself. If you activate Word, you will see that the chart has been resized.
