OFF2000: Error Message "Error 1500 . Another installation is in progress..."

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to install Microsoft Office, you receive the following error message:

Error 1500. Another installation is in progress. You must complete that installation before continuing this one.
When you click Retry, the message is displayed again. When you click Cancel, the installation stops.


RESOLUTION

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys and Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If you are running Windows NT, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).

To resolve this problem, delete the InProgress subkey in the registry by following these steps:

  1. On the Start menu, click Run.


  2. Type regedit and click OK.


  3. In the left pane, click the plus sign (+) next to each of the following folders, in order:


  4. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
    SOFTWARE
    Microsoft
    Windows
    CurrentVersion
    Installer
  5. Then, right-click the InProgress folder, and click Delete on the shortcut menu. Click Yes to delete the folder.


  6. On the Registry menu, click Exit.


  7. Restart the computer, and try running the installation program again.



STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
