OFF2000: Earlier Office Versions Removed with Advertised Installation

ID: Q233496

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

When you use the /j switch on the command line to install Office 2000, all earlier versions of Office are removed, and you are not given the option of keeping them.

CAUSE

Because there is no user interface displayed when you advertise Office using the /j switch, the default installation of Office is applied. The default installation removes any previous versions of Office.

RESOLUTION

To prevent the removal of earlier Office programs when you install Office using the /j switch, use a transform to specify which programs from previous versions to keep. To do this:

  1. Start the Custom Installation Wizard (CIW).

  2. In the Specify Default Path and Organization dialog box, specify an installation location that is different from your current Office versions. If you do not do this, the previous Office versions are removed even if you use the transform.

  3. In the Remove Previous Versions dialog box, select the Remove the following versions of Microsoft Office applications; Setup does not display the Remove Previous versions panel option.

  4. Clear the check box for any Office program you want to keep.

  5. Click Finish.

  6. Quit the CIW.

  7. NOTE: The above steps outline the minimum items to be covered when you create your transform using the CIW.

  8. As a member of the Administrators group, run Office Setup and specify the transform on the command line with the /j switch. For example, if your transform is called Custom.mst, then the command line is:
    <path>\setup.exe /jm Data1.msi /t Custom.mst
where <path> is the location of your Office source files and the transform. If Custom.mst is not in the same folder as Data1.msi, you have to add the path to it following /t in the above command line.

  9. If you have Internet Explorer 4.01 with SP1/SP2 or Internet Explorer 5, and the Windows Desktop Update installed, log in as a user and click one of the Office shortcuts on the Programs menu.

  10. This completes the Office installation, and your earlier version of Office (as specified in the transform) remains on your computer.

  11. If you do not have the Windows Desktop Update installed, log in as a user and run Office Setup using the following command line:
    <path>\setup.exe /qb
You can also use the above command line with /q or /qn instead of /qb.

NOTE: The above steps may replace the shortcuts to your previous Office version programs that are on the Programs menu. For more information about this issue, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
