You may receive the following error message:

An unexpected error has occurred.

CAUSE

This error message occurs for one of the following reasons. See the "What to Try" section for the resolution that applies to your situation:

You have programs running while Office is installing.

The Temp folder contains a large number of files.

WHAT TO TRY

Programs Running While Office Installs

Close any unnecessary programs before installing Office. Most programs such as virus checking software and system monitoring software can be turned off according to their documentation. To verify no unnecessary programs are running check the Task List. To check the Task List in Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows 98 press CTRL+ALT+DEL. To check the Task List in Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 press CTRL+ALT+DEL and click Task Manager. With the exceptions of Explorer and Systray, all other programs can be removed by selecting the program in the Task list and then clicking End Task.

The Temp Directory Contains a Large Number of Files

The Temp folder may contain files that are interfering with the installation of Office. To remove these files from Microsoft Windows 95 or later, restart the computer in MS-DOS mode and navigate to the Temp folder, usually located at C:\Windows\Temp. Once there, delete any files found in this folder. In Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, navigate to the Temp folder usually located in the root folder of the system hard disk (C:\Temp). Display the contents of the Temp folder with details and delete files that were not created on the current date.
