OFF2000: Internet Explorer 5 Not Installed When Using the /j Switch

ID: Q234356

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

When you install Office using the /j command-line switch, Internet Explorer 5 is not installed.

Internet Explorer 5 also may not be installed if you run Office Setup after the /j switch has been used to advertise Office.

CAUSE

In order to install Internet Explorer 5 on Windows NT 4.0, you must be a member of the Administrators group. When you install Office using the /j switch, you are preparing the computer so that users who are not members of the Administrators group can install Office. Therefore, the installation of Internet Explorer 5 is suppressed in this scenario.

In this configuration, the NOIE property is automatically set to True if you are not a member of the Administrators group.

RESOLUTION

If you want to install Internet Explorer 5 in this scenario, do the following:

  1. Log on as a member of the Administrators group.

  2. Double-click IE5Setup.exe in the \IE5\En folder on the root of the Office 2000 CD.

  3. Follow the directions provided in the Internet Explorer 5 Setup dialog boxes.

MORE INFORMATION

If you advertise Office 2000 using the /j switch, the next step in the installation process depends on whether Internet Explorer 4.01 (with SP1 or SP2) and the Windows Desktop Update are installed.

Windows Desktop Update Installed

If you (a member of the Administrators group) have Internet Explorer 4.01 (with SP1 or SP2) and the Windows Desktop Update installed, and you advertise Office using the /j switch (that is, d:\setup.exe /jm Data1.msi), then the Office program shortcuts are placed on the Programs menu (click Start and then click Programs). If you click one of these shortcuts, the Windows Installer starts, and it then installs the program associated with the shortcut.

If you are a member of the Administrators group, the first time you click one of these shortcuts, Internet Explorer 5 is also installed. If you are not a member of the Administrators group, Internet Explorer 5 is not installed when you click one of the Office shortcuts. You need to follow the steps in the "Resolution" section to install Internet Explorer 5.

Windows Desktop Update Not Installed

If you do not have the Windows Desktop Update installed (regardless of your browser version) and you (a member of the Administrators group) advertise Office using the /j switch (that is, d:\setup.exe /jm Data1.msi), then the Office program shortcuts are not placed on the Programs menu.

In this scenario, you have to run Office Setup (without using the /j switch) in order to complete the Office installation. If you are a member of the Administrators group, Internet Explorer 5 is also installed when you run Office Setup. However, if you are not a member of the Administrators group, Internet Explorer 5 is not installed when you install Office. You need to follow the steps in the "Resolution" section to install Internet Explorer 5.

NOTE: If you are not a member of the Administrators group when you run Office Setup, you must use either the /q or /qb switch. For more information, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
