OFF2000: Prompt for User Information and CD Key Starting Program

ID: Q236588

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

When you start one of the Office programs, you may be prompted to type your user name, initials, organization, and CD Key. You may see this prompt even though you typed in your user information and CD Key when you installed Office 2000.

CAUSE

This problem can be caused by missing, incorrect, or corrupt information in the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{GUID}
{GUID} in this registry key is actually a 32-character string that varies according to the version of Office 2000 you have installed. For example, the {GUID} for Office Premium is:
{00000409-78E1-11D2-B60F-006097C998E7}
The problem described earlier occurs because the ProductID string value is missing from this registry key.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, type your CD Key and click OK.

This creates the ProductID string value in the registry and populates it with the correct data value.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
