OFF97: "Failed To Unregister .SRG File" Error When Uninstalling Office

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

When you run the Office 97 setup program to remove Office 97, you may receive the following error:

Failed to unregister .SRG file
NOTE: This message may be repeated more than one time.


CAUSE

This behavior will occur when you do the following:

  1. Install Office 97.


  2. Install Office 2000 without removing Office 97.


  3. You then remove some or all of Office 97 at a later time.



RESOLUTION

Click OK to each of the messages, Setup will continue and finish correctly. Office 2000 will run correctly.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
