SYMPTOMS

Microsoft Outlook 97 is slow to start and quit when running under Microsoft Windows NT 4.0.

CAUSE

The incorrect version of MSVCRT40.DLL and MSVCRT.DLL are installed on the computer.

RESOLUTION

The files, MSVCRT40.DLL and MSVCRT.DLL, may be the wrong size or an incompatible version. The correct sizes for these files are as follows:

 File name File size
 MSVCRT40.DLL 319KB
 MSVCRT.DLL 260KB

Both files should be in the C:\winnt\system32 folder.

If you find that the sizes of these files on your computer are not correct, copy them from the Microsoft Office 97 or Outlook 97 compact disc. The MSVCRT40.DLL file is located on the root folder of the CD. The MSVCRT.DLL file is located on the CD at:

   \Office\WMS\Common

To replace these files first rename the files on your computer and then replace the files with copies from your original discs.

Rename the Current Files

1. Close all open programs.

2. Click Start, point to Programs, and click Windows NT Explorer.

3. In the folder list, click the plus (+) sign next to the Winnt folder to

   open it.

4. Click the System32 folder to open it.

5. In the right pane, locate the file MSVCRT40.DLL. Right click the file,

   and then click Rename.

6. Type MSVCRT40.OLD and then press enter.

7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 and rename MSVCRT.DLL to MSVCRT.OLD.

NOTE: If the files are not visible, on the View menu, click Folder Options. On the View tab click to select Show All Files. Click to clear "Hide file extensions of known file types." Click OK.

Copy the Files From the CD to the System32 Folder

1. Click Start, point to Programs, and then click Windows NT Explorer.

2. Insert your original compact disc for Office 97 or Outlook 97. On the

folder list, click the CD drive to open it.

   MSVCRT40.DLL, and then click Properties.

6. Click to select Archive. If Read-only is select, click to clear the
   check box.

the location of this file on the CD. On the CD it is located in the
   following folder:

      \Office\WMS\Common
