OL98: (CW) Digitally Signed Message Loses ID

NOTE: These procedures only apply if you have installed Outlook with the Corporate Workgroup/Other option. This option allows you to use Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) services. To determine your installation type, on the Help Menu click About Microsoft Outlook. In About Microsoft Outlook you should see "Corporate" if you have the Corporate Workgroup installation.

SYMPTOMS

When you create a Digitally Signed (S/MIME) message and send it to another person on a Microsoft Exchange Server, the recipient has no Digital ID when the message is opened.


CAUSE

The "Clients support S/MIME messages" option is not selected on the Microsoft Exchange Server. This option is not selected by default.


RESOLUTION

Before sending the message, follow these steps:

  1. On the File menu, click Properties.


  2. On the Security tab, click to clear "Send clear text signed message."


To make this the default setting, follow these steps:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.


  2. On the Security tab, click to select "Add digital signature to outgoing messages."


  3. Click to clear "Send clear text signed message."


NOTE: All of your messages will be sent digitally signed. If you want to turn this off for a particular message, follow these steps within your new mail message:
  1. On the View menu, click Options.


  2. Click to clear "Add digital signature to outgoing message."


  3. Click Close, and send the message.
