OL98: (CW) How to Add or Reset Outlook Shortcuts on OSB

The information in this article applies to:


SUMMARY

If you customize the default Microsoft Outlook buttons on the Microsoft Office Shortcut Bar (OSB) and then want to reset them, remove and reinstall the OSB, or manually recreate the shortcuts.

The purpose of this article is to descrbe how to recreate the Outlook shortcuts on the OSB if you are able to run Office setup or not.

When you install Microsoft Office 97 with the OSB and Outlook, the OSB will contains buttons to access folders in Outlook.

These shortcut buttons are added for Outlook:

New Message
New Appointment
New Task
New Contact
New Journal Entry
New Note
Microsoft Outlook
NOTE: The Outlook button is not displayed on the OSB by default.

If you chose the default installation folder for Microsoft Office 97, then each of the shortcut buttons points to:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Outlook.exe.
If you delete the OSB shortcuts for Outlook and want to reset to the default, the recommended method is to remove and reinstall OSB using Office Setup.

Using Setup to Reset the Outlook Shortcuts on OSB

To remove and reinstall OSB, follow these steps:

  1. Right-click the control menu in the upper-left corner of the OSB, and click Exit to close the OSB.


  2. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.


  3. Double-click Add/Remove Programs. On the Install/Uninstall tab click Microsoft Office 97, and then click Add/Remove to start Maintanance Mode Setup.


  4. In the first Office Setup dialog box, click Add/Remove.


  5. Click to select Office Tools, and then click Change Option. Click to clear the Microsoft Office Shortcut Bar check box, and then click OK.


  6. Click Continue. When you are asked to confirm removing one component, click Yes. When the Setup program is finished, click OK.


Repeat steps 2-5 to re-install OSB, click to select the Microsoft Office Shortcut Bar check box to re-install it.

Determining Where a Shortcut Points

  1. Right-click the shortcut and click Properties.


  2. Click the Shortcut tab.


The path and filename is found in the Target box.

Adding the Outlook Shortcuts to OSB

To add the Outlook shortcuts to the OSB, follow these steps:
  1. Click the control menu in the upper-left corner of the OSB, and click Customize.


  2. On the Buttons tab, click to select Office in the Toolbar list and click Add File. In the Look In box, browse to the folder where Outlook.exe is located and click Add. The default location is:
    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Outlook.exe
    NOTE: If you have installed Office to another location, use that location in these steps.


  3. Click OK. This adds a shortcut button for Outlook to the OSB.


  4. Right-click the new icon on the OSB and click Properties. On the Shortcut tab, click in the Target box and press the END key to move the cursor to the right end of the text. Press SPACEBAR to add a space and then type /c IPM.NOTE. When complete, the text should be similar to:
    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Outlook.exe /c IPM.NOTE


  5. If you have configured the Office Shortcut bar to display Tooltips, you can rename the Tooltip for your new icon by right-clicking it and then clicking Rename.


Repeat steps 1-5 using the information below for the Tooltip name and the switch to add after the path.

Changing Icons for the Outlook Shortcuts on the OSB

The previous steps changed the path and target of the OSB buttons for Outlook. The icons show a shortcut to Outlook rather than an Outlook folder.

To change the icons for the Outlook buttons on OSB, follow these steps:
  1. Click the Start button, point to Programs and click Windows Explorer.


  2. On the View menu, click Options. Click to select Show All Files and click OK.


  3. Press F5 to refresh your screen. Right-click the icon you placed on the OSB and click Properties. On the Shortcut tab, click Change Icon.


  4. Click Browse. In the Look In box, browse to the folder where Outllib.dll is located and click Open. The default path is:
    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Outllib.dll


  5. Click to select the desired icon from the list click OK and OK.
