OL98: (CW) Outlook Does Not Work with Lotus Notes Mail

The information in this article applies to:

Microsoft Outlook 98

NOTE: These procedures only apply if you have installed Outlook with the Corporate Workgroup/Other option. This option allows you to use Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) services. To determine your installation type, on the Help Menu click About Microsoft Outlook. In About Microsoft Outlook you should see "Corporate" if you have the Corporate Workgroup installation.

SYMPTOMS

You cannot connect to a Lotus Notes Mail mailbox using Microsoft Outlook as the mail client. In some cases you can connect, but when you try to open any message, you may receive the following error message:

Unable to open item. And extended error occurred unknown to mapi

CAUSE

The MAPI driver provided by Lotus with Notes Mail implements too little of the MAPI specification for use as an Outlook information store provider.

RESOLUTION

Lotus Notes Mail is currently not a supported configuration. Microsoft is working with Lotus to resolve this issue.

Lotus Notes Mail

Netscape SMTP driver (using the Internet Mail driver provided with Outlook, you can connect to Netscape and other SMTP/POP3 servers.)

Drivers not listed are untested as of February 3, 1998.

If your e-mail provider can deliver mail using the POP3 protocol, you can use Outlook to get your mail. The Internet Mail Only (IMO) installation allows you to deliver from a POP3 Server natively, and if you are using the Corporate/Workgroup (CW) installation, you can use the Internet E-mail service to get your mail from a POP3 server.

Several mail providers have the ability to "serve" mail out in the POP3 format, even though that may not be the primary protocol for delivering mail. For example, Microsoft Exchange Server is best accessed using the Microsoft Exchange Server protocols, which allow for the total feature set of Outlook (folder sharing, server mailboxes, and so on). However, Microsoft Exchange Server can also be configured to "serve" out mail in the POP3 protocol, so if you want to simply deliver your mail to a local Personal Folders store, this is an available option.

Other mail providers that can be configured to deliver mail using POP3 include Lotus Notes and GroupWise.
