OL98: (CW) Troubleshooting MSN 2.5 and Outlook 98

NOTE: These procedures only apply if you have installed Outlook with the Corporate Workgroup/Other option. This option allows you to use Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) services. To determine your installation type, on the Help Menu click About Microsoft Outlook. In About Microsoft Outlook you should see "Corporate" if you have the Corporate Workgroup installation.

Here are several items to check when troubleshooting Internet e-mail and MSN 2.5.

Has the Mail Been Migrated to the POP3 Servers?

To see if your mail account has been migrated, open your Internet browser and go to:
http://members.msn.com
Type your e-mail address in the e-mail section and click Search. If it returns
@email.msn.com
the e-mail account has been migrated and can use POP3/SMTP.

If it returns
@msn.com
the e-mail account has not been migrated and you may want to migrate your e-mail account to POP3/SMTP. If you haven't migrated your mail and the incoming mail server is set to pop3.e-mail.msn.com, you will not be able to log on.

To migrate your MSN mail account to the POP3/SMTP servers open your Internet browser and go to:
http://setup.msn.com/membersonly/config/default.asp
Follow the steps on this page to migrate your e-mail account.

Do You Have Client for Microsoft Networks installed?

Client for Microsoft Networks allows Windows to cache your passwords. To see if it is installed, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and click Control Panel.


  2. Double-click Network.


  3. On the Configuration tab, verify that Client for Microsoft Networks is in the list of installed network components. If it is not, click Add, click Client, click Add, click Microsoft in the Manufacturers list, click Client for Microsoft Networks in the Network Clients list, and click OK twice.


  4. Click Yes in the System Settings Change dialog box to restart your computer.


Is Secure Password Authentication Enabled?

MSN requires Secure Password Authentication be enabled. To set or check this option, follow these steps:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Services. Click to select Internet e-mail and then click Properties.


  2. On the Servers tab, click to select "Log on using Secure Password Authentication."


  3. Click OK, OK, and then Close, to close all open windows.


  4. Quit Outlook, and then restart Outlook for the settings to take effect.


Is Outlook the Default E-mail Client?

To set Outlook as the default mail client, follow these steps:
  1. Right-click Microsoft Internet Explorer, and on the shortcut menu click Properties.


  2. On the Programs tab, under "Choose which programs you want to use for the following" click to select Microsoft Outlook.


  3. Click OK to close the window.


If you can receive e-mail in Microsoft Outlook Express, but not Outlook, check to see if Secure Password Authentication is enabled. If it is not, use the steps in the "Secure Password Authentication" section to enable it.

If you can log on to MSN, but can't go the MSN sites or receive e-mail, contact MSN support.
